Medienscouts NRW Grundschule

Qualification Medienscouts NRW for Primary school

Promoting media skills is becoming increansingly important in primary schools, as many children are given their own smartphone during their primary school years. While they learn quickly and intuitively the operation of the device, the challenges of social media, class chats or child-friendly internet research are far greater.

The aim of the project is to support children at an early age in dealing critically and confidently with the opportunities and risks on the internet. The accompanied peer-to-peer method strengthens children in their media skills and encourages them to exchange ideas with each other. The Medienscouts NRW camp is a central element for the trained media scouts. Here they are to supervise various stations where the other schoolchildren learn different aspects of media skills, such as photo rights, in a playful way. The media scouts are accompanied by two counsellors who not only train them, but also support and protect them during their work.

In recent years, the State Institute for Media North Rhine-Westphalia has carried out the “Medienscouts NRW” project together with municipalities throughout North Rhine-Westphalia, as part of which secondary school students are trained to become so-called “Medienscouts” in the school context. Due to the positive response and great interest in participating in the project in the previous project phases, the "Medienscouts NRW" project will be continued again as part of a train-the-trainer program.

More information on qualification

The Medienscouts NRW Grundschule programme is linked to the Internet-ABC programme. It is therefore important that the participating primary schools have worked with the Internet-ABC beforehand and ideally have even completed the qualification as an Internet ABC specialist. The qualification is aimed at teachers and educational specialists at primary schools. At least one person must be a teacher.
The pedagogical specialists include:

  • special or social education worker

  • school social worker

  • Multiprofessional team member

  • OGS specialists

  • Media educator

The counsellors are trained by a media education trainer during the qualification process. The specialists then independently train the media scouts at their schools.

Structure of the training

The qualification takes place over three afternoons. Two dates can also be organised digitally by arrangement. In addition, a one-hour online consultation can be offered.

Six primary schools can take part. Two people per school are trained as counsellors. They independently train around 15 media scouts at their school.

The first session is the most time-consuming at approx. 4 hours, the second takes approx. 3.5 hours and the last session approx. 2.5 hours. The qualification programme concludes with the subsequent implementation of the Medienscouts NRW camp.
